Safe Haven

After reading the first 3 "Twilight Saga" books in less than 2 weeks, I decided I needed a break from vampires & werewolves for awhile, and picked up the latest from Nicholas Sparks.
I always anxiously await his new books, and "Save Haven" did not disappoint! All I can say to those who haven't read it yet is - you must, and you'll be glad you did!

Team Edward

I may have been the last person alive who hadn't read any of the "Twilight" books, or seen any of the movies. Actually, I still haven't seen any of the movies, but I finally decided to take a break from my usual murder mystery reading to see what all the fuss was about...
I had no idea if I would make it through the first book, but as I write tonight I am close to finishing "Eclipse", the 3rd book in the series. Will the movies be worth the wait as well?

My Thanksgiving realization...

I woke up Thanksgiving morning wishing I didn't have to go to work. However, I quickly realized that was the wrong attitude to have - especially on a day when I should have been thankful to
have a job! So unlike many who took the day off, I went to work - just a little late, because it just wouldn't have seemed like Thanksgiving without a traditional turkey dinner!

Inspired words from Johnny Cash

"Money can't buy back your youth when you're old, a friend when you're lonely, or a love that's grown cold." Not even sure who wrote "A Satisfied Mind", but it is chillingly sung by Johnny Cash on his CD "American VI - Ain't No Grave" - currently playing in my car, over and over and over again!

Lions and Tigers and Bears....

...but no Elephants? Strange! Not a single elephant at the Gladys Porter Zoo here in Brownsville, Texas...
Still, after playing with my "virtual zoo" on Facebook for the past year, it was fun to get out and see some real animals.
Especially the tigers!

Rizzoli & Isles

I haven't had much interest in any new TV shows over the last several years. But when the premiere of "Rizzoli & Isles" was announced, I knew I'd be tuning in.

Hard as it is to believe, this has nothing to do with Angie Harmon, although I will readily admit that she is totally hot, and was one of the reasons I became hooked on "Law & Order". No, I will be watching this show because it is based on two characters I've come to love through the novels of Tess Gerritsen http://www.tessgerritsen.com/ .

She has written 9 novels about Jane Rizzoli & Maura Isles, and I've read every one of them. Now I can't wait to see if the "movie" is as good as the books!

Eat Mor Chikin

Cow-Clad Customers Get Free Chick-fil-A Meals on Cow Appreciation Day This Friday
ATLANTA — July 6, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Chick-fil-A is issuing a cattle call! On Friday, July 9, Chick-fil-A® restaurants nationwide will celebrate the company’s annual Cow Appreciation Day event by offering a FREE meal to any customer who visits one of the chain’s mall or stand-alone restaurants fully dressed as a cow.
Customers dressed “head to hoof” in cow attire will receive a free Chick-fil-A Meal which includes an entrée of choice, a side item and a Dr Pepper® (or other beverage choice). For customers partially dressed in cow attire, such as a cow-spotted scarf, purse, hat or other accessory, Chick-fil-A will award a complimentary entrée.
Two online photo contests are also part of the festivities. A photo contest for adults is hosted on the Chick-fil-A Facebook page. A second photo contest for kids 10 and under called Show Us the Cow is available at www.showusthecow.com. Both contests will award free Chick-fil-A products for a year to the best cow-dressed customers, and children will also have the opportunity to win a $1,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond and a digital camera through the “Show Us the Cow” photo contest.
“Cow Appreciation Day continues to be one of our best indicators of the great passion our customers have for our brand,” said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A’s senior vice president of marketing. “It takes a loyal fan to dress like a cow for a free meal. Cow Appreciation Day is our way of thanking them for their loyalty, not to mention a day simply to have fun!”
For the past 15 years, the renegade “Eat Mor Chikin” Cows have entertained consumers with their desperate, self-preserving antics in an effort to convert beef eaters into chicken fans. The Chick-fil-A Cows and the “Eat Mor Chikin” campaign have enjoyed such widespread public success that the chain has evolved the campaign into a fully integrated marketing program. In addition to clever roadside billboards, the “Eat Mor Chikin” Cows are the focal point of Chick-fil-A’s in-store point-of-purchase materials, promotions, radio and TV advertising, and clothing and merchandise sales.

Happy Birthday America!

Due to effects of Hurricane Alex, all of the Independence Day festivities scheduled for Brownsville were canceled. A Fourth of July just wouldn't seem right without fireworks, so Phil & I drove out to South Padre Island, and celebrated America's birthday with a first class show!

Deep In The Heart Of Texas

Actually, quite a bit south of the heart. Far enough south to be called the big toe of Texas maybe... Any further south, and you'll find Mexico. That's where Phil & I now reside. After loading our moving van most of Tuesday afternoon (June 15th), we were on the road by 9PM, and heading to Brownsville, Texas.

We traveled through Arizona into Nevada, through Las Vegas, into California briefly, then back into Arizona, through Phoenix, into New Mexico, and arrived in Texas around 6PM on Wednesday the 16th.

Just to give you an idea of how big Texas is - that was only right around halfway to our destination!

It was after 6:00 Thursday before we finally arrived in Brownsville - a very long 45 hours!

XLIV

Nothing super about my turning 44 - it's just always cool to use Roman numerals, especially when I'm the same age as the Super Bowl!

Which, I might add, won't be all that super either, since the Vikings went down in flames...

Other than being another year older, the only other news to report is that Phil has officially moved in with me. He and his wife are separated, and he was out of work, so after spending a week in St. George at Christmas, he decided to stay and try to find work here.
